Historic York, England

Virtually Visiting

York, England is a historic city located in the northern part of the country. It is known for its well-preserved medieval architecture, including York Minster, the largest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe. The city also has a rich Roman history, as it was once a major Roman military fortress known as Eboracum. Visitors to York can explore the city walls, which date back to Roman times and offer panoramic views of the city.

York Minster is one of the largest and most beautiful cathedrals in Europe, and a masterpiece of medieval architecture. The building of York Minster started in the 13th century and was completed in the 15th century. It is famous for its stunning stained glass windows, intricate carvings, and impressive towers. Visitors can explore the Minster's history, art, and architecture, and climb to the top of the central tower for a breathtaking view of the city. York Minster is a must-visit for anyone interested in history, architecture, or art. Check out our virtual tour of the York Minster precinct in 360° here!

One of the city's most popular attractions is the Jorvik Viking Centre, which offers a glimpse into the Viking history of York. The Centre features a reconstruction of a Viking-era city, complete with houses, workshops, and artifacts from the Viking period. Another must-see attraction is the National Railway Museum, which has a collection of over 300 years of railway history. The museum features over 100 locomotives, including the world's fastest steam locomotive, the Mallard.

You may have also heard of 'The Shambles', a historic street known for its charming, timber-framed buildings that date back to the medieval period, some of which lean so much that they almost touch at the top! The street was once home to many butcher shops, and the name "Shambles" comes from the old English word for "slaughterhouse." Today, the street is a bustling tourist destination, lined with unique shops, cafes, and restaurants. The Shambles is a well-preserved example of the city's rich history, and its atmospheric streetscape has inspired many artists and writers over the years. It is one of York's most popular and beloved attractions. The city is also famous for its traditional sweet shops, including the famous "Terry's of York", which has been making chocolate for over 200 years.

York is a city that is sure to delight visitors with its rich history, charming architecture, and vibrant culture, and if you can't visit in person (or even if you can!) we are delighted to take you there virtually with our fantastic guide John, from All Points North.
